12 Subtle Signs of Abuse

Some warning signs of abuse in the home or in a relationship include:

  • Pushing for quick involvement: Comes on strong, claiming, “I’ve never felt loved like this by anyone,” or saying “I love you” after only a few days of knowing each other. This is consistent with love bombing.
  • Unrealistic expectations: Expects you to be the perfect mate and meet his or her every need.
  • Isolation: Tries to cut you off from family and friends; accuses people who support you of “bringing you down.” The abuser may try to isolate their partner from friends and family, making it difficult for them to maintain outside relationships or support systems.
  • Blaming others for problems or mistakes: It’s always someone else’s fault when anything goes wrong.
  • Lack of regard: The abuser might bump into their partner or spill something on their partner on accident but doesn’t feel bad or say sorry. This signifies lack of empathy and lack of consideration.
  • Ex Comparisons: Says things like, “This was never an issue in any of my past relationships, you’re the only one with the problem.”
  • Control: The abuser may exhibit controlling behaviors, such as monitoring their partner’s activities, finances, or communication, or making decisions without consulting their partner.
  • Criticism: The abuser may criticize their partner constantly, making them feel inadequate or ashamed. If you get offended or hurt, they switch tones and say, “I’m just kidding,” or “learn how to take a joke.”
  • Blame-shifting: The abuser may shift blame onto their partner for their own abusive behavior, making their partner feel guilty or responsible for the abuse.
  • Threats: The abuser may use threats, either overt or subtle, to control their partner’s behavior or keep them in the relationship or to keep them from challenging their words or actions.
  • Intimidation: The abuser may use tactics such as yelling, name-calling, or physical intimidation to control their partner or make them feel afraid.
  • Withholding affection: The abuser may withhold affection or emotional support as a means of control, making their partner feel unloved or unwanted.
